Signs You May Need Transmission Repair

Posted on: 24 August 2021

Most people know that if your car will not shift gears or has trouble shifting gears, they likely have a transmission problem. However, your transmission may give you many signs that it may be in need of repair. Knowing what these signs are can help you get transmission repair as soon as problems develop rather than having to wait until you can't drive your car at all. Here are a few of the lesser-known signs that your automobile may need transmission repair

Noises From the Car When You Put the Car in Neutral

When you put your car in to neutral, you should not hear any strange sounds or hear any weird vibrations. If you notice any weird noises coming from your car when your vehicle is in neutral, including whining or rumbling noises, this is indicative of a transmission issue. The issue can be as simple as your unit is running low on transmission fluid or needs a fluid flush, or it can be more complicated than that.

Shaking or Grinding When Your Car Switches Gears

If you notice that your car is shaking and grinding as it is being driven, it is important to notice what is occurring when this happens. Shaking and grinding can be indicative of anything from brake problems to transmission issues. If you notice that the car is shaking and grinding at the time that the car is switching gears, you are probably dealing with a transmission problem that will require transmission repairs.

The Check Engine Light Becomes Illuminated

The final lesser-known sign that you may need transmission repair is the check engine light becoming illuminated. One of the biggest misconceptions out there is that the check engine light only comes on if something is wrong with the engine. This is not true. There are many components that can cause the light to come on, including transmission issues. A repair shop can use a diagnostic code reader to determine what part of your car may be causing the check engine light to come on.

Your transmission will often give you many signs that something is amiss, including struggling to change gears or leaking transmission fluid. These are obvious signs you have a transmission problem that needs repairs, but there are less obvious signs as well, including strange noises when your car is in neutral, shaking or grinding when your car switches gears, and the check engine light becoming illuminated. Contact a transmission repair shop if you notice one or more of these signs to have your transmission inspected.
